Corners bumped, moderate edge wear esp. along spine. Top and base of spine have a little chipping and small tears to front cover along edge of spine. There is a bit of a curve to the book, and one can distinguish a slight gap at the spine between each of the four gatherings. This is a Mercury Mystery reprint of the original book, published by Lawrence E. Spivak, Mercury Book No. 48 probably in 1941. It was abridged for this edition. There is an advertisement page for a number of other novels published by Mercury around this time. The order coupon has been clipped from that page. Overall a solid copy of an early reprint of Stout's second Nero Wolfe novel.

"Nero Wolfe is the superlative detective of gargantuan girth. And now this orchid-growing genius of deduction, with the help of his trusted assistant, Archie Goodwin, must discover why two members of The Harvard Club suddenly died and why a third member mysteriously disappeared. Suspected of their murders is a famous novelist whose bitter hatred of the victims has spanned twenty-five years. Others may soon die if Nero Wolfe can't read between the lines and slam the book on the cunning killer."; 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall
