"Johnny Doane's brother Michael was blind. Yet he loved to go with Johnny to the games the Cardinals played. Johnny was the Cardinals' center fielder, and Michael thought he was just about the best ball player ever. Johnny knew he was not, that he was a poor hitter, but he couldn't bear to disappoint Michael. So he got in the habit of telling Michael small white lies. For example, he would describe an extra-base hit when actually he had reached base through a fielder's error, or an in-field pop-up would turn into an 'almost' home run. All this made Michael very happy, but of course eventually he found out the truth. How he found out and what happened to Johnny afterwards is told with lots of good baseball action.
