From the Foreword: "The purpose of this book is not to recall facts or dates of history (though some names and dates are correct) ; rather it is to preserve for future generations, certain folklore tales and songs which were handed down to me by my parents and grandparents. These stories are actual happenings in the lives of the sea-faring, God fearing people who lived and loved and died on the sandy, windswept shores of Carteret County, for two hundred and fifty years or more.
" This is a reproduction of a sketch which my wife and I have performed many times for Civic events in Carteret County. I sang the songs while my wife played my accompaniment on the piano.
"So far as I know, the tunes of these songs were never written out in notes, but handed down from generation to generation. "
