"Ted Chandler, born in 1927 in the mountains of North Carolina, went to the Thomasville Orphanage with brothers John and Calvin in 1934 after his father died, leaving his mother impoverished and with four children. After a childhood at the orphanage, Chandler joined the Navy, then went to Wake Forest University, where he was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate in science. He attended the University of North Carolina medical school as one of the original Morehead Scholars. After a successful private medical practice in Hickory, NC, he is now an associate professor of medicine at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University. He lives in Thomasville, NC in the home built by a long time orphanage employee-Mr. Paul Edinger-the father of his wife, Fran. He is a deacon at Rich Fork Baptist Church.
