A three-volume set of the authoritative edition which contains all corrections and revisions intended by the author. Each volume has a dust jacket designed by Rita Marshal and illustrated by Alan Lee. Volume I (The Fellowship of the Ring) is G, with a dampstain part-way down the side edge and bumped corners; its DJ is also G, with some edgewear and a 1" chip at bottom of spine. Volumes II (The Two Towers) and III (The Return of the King) are VG+; DJs are VG+. A very nice set of this fantasy classic.

352 pp., 18"X15 3/4" fold-out map of Middle Earth tipped in after last page. Brown half-cloth boards with title in gilt stamped on spine. Front board has gilt stamped design of a red eye circled by red runes and topped by gold ring. Corners slightly bumped, slight edge wear, binding fairly tight. Jacket has a little edge wear and rubbing, with a couple small closed tears. An attractive copy. "In the First Part of The Lord of the Rings, 111-year-old Bilbo Baggins passed along his magical ring to his orphaned nephew, Frodo - unwittingly setting its original owner, the horrible Gollum, on his trail. Lest the ring fall into evil hands, Frodo sought to destroy it at the Mountain of Fire in the enemy land of Mordor. He convened the Companions of the Ring to carry out this perilous mission, but his brave band has been scattered, beset by orc-soldiers, and in the Second Part, as 'the great Darkness' descends, Frodo himself has mysteriously disappeared. Some yellowing but text is clean and unmarked. Reading copy. Second volume in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, this is the Dolphin Edition, published by arrangement with Houghton Mifflin.
"The Fellowship was scattered. Some were bracing hopelessly for war against the ancient evil of Sauron. Some were contending with the treachery of the wizard Saruman. Only Frodo and Sam were left to take the accursed Ring of Power to be destroyed in Mordor -- the dark Kingdom where Sauron was supreme. Their guide was Gollum, deceitful and lust-filled, slave to the corruption of the Ring.
