"Silver—a whole mountain of it! Following the trail of some runaway horses, Jim Norton had stumbled on a fortune. Or so he and 17-year-old Earl thought at first. But they soon learned the truth of Uncle Henry’s words: ‘Silver is work. . . a long way and a million blisters.’ And they soon learned to work sensibly, for overwork could break a miner’s strength, and carelessness could cause a mine cave-in. The time was 1870, and the place Montana. The two greenhorns were fresh from the comforts of Indiana and had been on their first prospecting trip. Little had they thought they’d find a rich strike, or that their camping spot in unmapped territory would become, overnight, the scene of a stampede of jostling prospectors and, later, the site of roads and stores and cabins—a growing mining town."

His father, however, promised to help. Sam Beaver, a boy who loved all wild things, took Louis to school, where he learned to read and write. This was a help, but it did not solve his major problem: he was in love with the beautiful swan, Serena, and she spurned him because he was defective. And that was when Louis's father, the old cob, did a difficult thing -- he put honor aside and stole a trumpet so his son would be able to woo his love. Louis's determination to become a trumpeter and pay off his father's debt takes him far from the wilderness he loves. But he succeeds and wins the swan of his desiring."

"Wolves and panthers and bears roamed the deep Wisconsin woods in the 1860s. But Pa Ingalls preferred to live miles from his nearest neighbors. Pa built a snug log cabin for Ma and his three daughters, Mary and Laura and Baby Carrie. He hunted and trapped and farmed. Ma knew how to make her own cheese and sugar. At night the wind moaned lonesomely, but Pa played his fiddle and sang to his little girls."

At Ghost Gables she met pretty Glenna Brockman, who had plans to turn the old house into a dormitory for girls from the adjacent college. Mystery followed mystery as the girls tried to put the house into shape. And the strangest mystery of all was the locked room. The plot really thickened when several different ghosts were to be seen stalking the grounds at night. Added to the existing puzzles was the appearance of the tramp in the nearby woods, a tramp who puzzled Lois and whose identity finally helped to resolve the biggest mystery of all."
