"The two villages discussed in this book represent two types of village in the plains of Mysore, South India. Wangala is a 'wet' village in the centre of the irrigated area. Dalena is a 'dry' village on the fringe. Before irrigation reached the area the two villages were almost identical in all aspects of their social and economic life. Irrigation has been the determining factor in the distinct roles the two villages have assumed in the regional economy. . . The author argues that economic development need not necessarily produce economic change. She finds, however, that where economic change does take place, there are corresponding changes in political and ritual roles and relations and in the principles of social organization."; 7" - 9" Tall

xi + 240 pp, navy cloth spine over dark blue boards, index, notes. Very slight edge wear. Jacket in protective wraps with slight edge wear. A tight, attractive copy.

"'Communication Ideas' is the first attempt to place publishing in America in its political and commercial setting. The book addresses the political implications of scholarly communication in the era of a new computerized technology. Horowitz does so by examing the classic problems of political theory (such issues as property versus rights and elite management versus citizen participation) in the context of scholarly publishing. But the discussion extends considerably beyond scholarly publishing into communication as a whole, encompassing cable cable and satellite television controls. Ultimately Horowitz considers such questions as: Who owns knowledge? How is it generated? What are its costs?"; 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall

Spine slightly slanted, else fine. Small card laid in: "With the compliments of the Duke University Press" and stamped June 25, 1964. DJ has minor edgewear and two tiny chips. Text is clean and unmarked.

"All universities are members of one world community, yet too often the contacts between universities in different countries promote injurious imitation. Such imitation is particularly harmful to the 'development countries' where major differences in cultural background, present needs, and national resources [need] radical changes in educational technique. Yet these are the very places where colonial inheritance has often promoted unwise, sometimes ridiculous, imitations of overseas patterns. Southeast Asia is an excellent region in which to study these effects for within a comparitively small area four different Western university systems have been copied. This volume presents an analysis of the way in which the techniques designed to further learning in their countries of origin became distorted by the different conditions in Southeast Asia. An account is given of the development of the universities up to 1960, country by country, and of the challenges which they faced."; 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall
